The Cabins at Crabtree Falls have 5 cozy cabins for rent, but the above information is about Richard’s Retreat, the cabin I personally stayed at. While all in the same area, they have different prices per night, the number of people they can accommodate, and various pet policies. Richard’s Retreat is the only cabin with hot tub to date.
Richard’s Retreat is an Appalachian cabin relocated from Kentucky and brought to a beautiful homesite at Crabtree Falls. It is their newest, largest, and most modern cabin. The Cabins at Crabtree Falls is just ½ mile from the falls; guests can enjoy the sounds of Crabtree Falls and the Tye River from their porch and by campfires under the night stars.

Unlike Chincoteague, Metompkin is in a rural setting – the neighborhood is eight houses along Metompkin Bay. The house is almost all windows on the waterside to take advantage of these beautiful views, we loved waking up early to watch the sunrise!. The beach is a 15-minute kayak trip away from the house, and it is an easy half-hour trip to Chincoteague if you’d instead go to the beach there. You can also drive to Assateague Island to see the lighthouse and the wild ponies.
The neighbors often fish in the bay, and surf fishing is great at certain times of the year. The host has crab traps – the crabbing is pretty good off the dock. If you are birder, there are many places to go; just ask the host! Onancock (10 minutes away) is where to go for excellent restaurants and charming little shops.
If you have been following me for a while now, you know Grayson Highlands State Park and Whitetop Mountain are two of my favorite places in Virginia. Rugby Creek Farm is the only place we stay in the area, and it is only 15 minutes away from the entrance of the park and 30 minutes away from Whitetop.
The Pondside Tiny Home and the Barn Loft are located on the Rugby Creek Farm nestled into the Appalachian Mountains. Both of these locations are great if you’re a fan of horses and mountain views, with the ability to bring your horse or simply visit the horses and other farm animals on the property.
Apple Ridge Farm Caboose is something I didn’t even know was possible until I stayed here. It’s an actual 1978 Norfolk Southern Caboose Car in cherry red. Although I really loved staying here as an adult, I imagine kids get a real kick out of it. There are great views and hiking right out the door.
As an added bonus, all profits from your stay go to fund the farm’s environmental education and summer camp for kids from inner-city neighborhoods and public housing projects.
Otterview Mountain House is a beautiful open-concept floorplan rustic house perched directly on the edge of the gorgeous valley below and is an excellent spot for sunrises and sunsets.
